How A Food Allergy Diet Can Help You Discover And Manage Your Allergy

Food allergy diet programs can vary greatly depending on the substance to which the subject is allergic, but they will usually involve finding the right source of protein for that specific body. Most food allergy problems are caused by proteins, although there are other substances which can cause allergic reactions. The first step in formulating a suitable diet is to identify the exact cause of the allergy, and this is far easier to say than it is to do. The basic method is to eliminate substances from the diet one by one, until the right substance is found.

The diet you start with needs to be a full diet, including any substance you suspect of being the allergen. There will inevitably be a reaction, but that is part of the price which needs to be paid for identifying the problem. As soon as the reaction is seen, switch to a completely bland diet to allow the reaction to subside. At this point, you can go back to the original diet, but omit just one item from the full diet you were eating before. This item should be the one you most suspect of being the allergen.

If you are right, there will be no reaction, and you can then plan to use this refined diet in the long term. You will know which substance you need to avoid, and be able to use the improved food labeling in retail stores to make sure that you keep it out of your diet. In the vast majority of cases, cutting out the substance to which you are allergic will be enough to allow you to live a normal life.

The one significant exception to this is in nut allergies, especially peanuts, where the diet needs to be even more restrictive. If there is even the slightest hint of the nut substance to which the patient is allergic, there could be a violent and potentially fatal reaction. You need to avoid all foods which have been prepared in an environment where nuts could be present, even if there is definitely no element of nuts in the food you are intending to eat.

The dangers of food allergies are now well documented, although there are still large sections of the population who don't know about them. The good news is that the food allergy networks have managed to raise enough awareness of the problem for the food industry to take notice. There has been a great improvement made in a very short time as to food labeling. Most importantly, the food industry is now aware that it is not enough to let people know of the ingredients which are actually in the food being old. With nuts, there is considerable danger to anyone who does not know that food has been prepared in an environment where there may be a residue of nuts.

A food allergy diet is far easier to formulate now that we have this enhanced knowledge. There is excellent labeling of all food items which are sold as wrapped packages. It is only the unlabeled food which should ever cause a problem. There are also many cookbooks produced by people who are either food allergy sufferers themselves, or who have a sufferer in the family. These will have recipes in them which include ingredients which simulate the taste or the usage of the banned ingredient, but which have none of the potential to cause the same reaction.

The future of food allergies and the diets used to combat them is uncertain, but great strides have been made. It is now possible to create a varied, nutritious and completely usable diet using ingredients which are similar to the ingredient which causes the reaction. Similar in taste, texture, and use, but not in the sense of containing the allergic substance. Allergy sufferers already have a far better life than only a few short years ago thanks to the new possibilities available to them, and if medical advances can be added to these superior diets there is no reason why allergy sufferers cannot be brought back to full health. There is ongoing research in many areas.

Following this type of highly restrictive food allergy diet can save you from the need to be rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, with all of the trauma and risk that this involves. The greatest problem you face is in eating food in restaurants or other places where there is no food labeling. Buying packaged food will usually allow you to know in advance what you are eating. The only exception is when food has been incorrectly or inadequately labeled. In this case, look out for announcements on support forums, as these can help you stick to your food allergy diet.
